Motivational Hacks for Staying Fit: The Busy 40+ Exec's Playbook

If your daily schedule is more packed than a can of sardines and the closest you've come to a workout lately is running late to meetings, then I have some tips for you to get you moving.

Because let's face it, at 40+, our bodies are like fine wine - still great, but a little more maintenance is required.

I am 41 (soon to be 42) so I know that a bit more strategy is required from personal experience.

Make Exercise Your New (Productive) Meeting

Here's a thought: schedule your workouts like they're the most important meetings of the day - because they are…

Would you bail on a meeting with your biggest client? No.

Put them in your calendar and treat them as non-negotiable.

Just as you wouldn't skip a crucial business meeting, don't skip your workout.

It's an appointment with your health, and guess what?

Your health is your most valuable asset.

Bonus points if you actually hold walking meetings.

Not only do you get your steps in, but you also get to be the quirky boss who thinks outside the box (or office).

Set Micro-Goals

Break down your fitness goals into small, achievable steps.

Instead of saying, "I want to be fit," set a goal like, "I will do three 30 minute walks this week."

Small victories pave the way to big successes.

Track Your Progress

There's nothing quite like seeing your progress visually.

Whether it's an app that celebrates your workout streaks or a journal where you jot down your daily achievements, tracking your progress can be incredibly motivating.

Reward Yourself

Met your weekly fitness goal? Treat yourself to something that doesn't undo your hard work - maybe a massage, a new book, or that gadget you've been eyeing.

Rewards make the journey sweeter.

Hire an Online Personal Trainer

Not that I’m biased or anything 😂 but sometimes, we need that extra push.

I provide personalised advice, a strategic game plan, motivation, and accountability.

Think of it as outsourcing for your fitness - delegating to an expert can yield impressive results.

Listen to Music or Podcasts

Make workout time double as "me time."

Catching up on your favourite tunes or podcasts can make exercise something you look forward to rather than dread.

Remember Your 'Why'

Why did you start this journey? Keep your motivations front and centre.

Whether it's for your health, your family, or just feeling better in your skin, your 'why' can keep you going on tough days.

Start Small

On days when motivation is scarce, commit to just 10 minutes of exercise.

More often than not, you'll find yourself pushing past that once you get started.

The hardest part is beginning.

The ‘Motivation Is Overrated’ Philosophy

Now, for the big reveal: motivation is nice when it visits, but like that one uncle, you can't rely on it to show up when you need it.

The real secret sauce? Habit.

You don't need to be motivated to brush your teeth; you just do it because it's part of your routine.

Exercise should be the same.

The less you think about it, the easier it becomes.

So, yeah, motivation is great, but so is just showing up - especially when you don’t want to.

Final Thoughts

Getting fit after 40, especially for the swamped exec, doesn't have to be a chore or another time-consuming commitment on your already overflowing plate.

With these actionable tips, you can make exercise a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.

And remember, every step, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.

So, let's get moving.

Your body (and your schedule) will thank you.
